Last year Dave Richo ran his first UK workshop for us, under the title, Saying Yes to the Givens of Life & Relationships, based on one of his recent books. The participants loved it. We are currently working with him to arrange another workshop.
The five significant givens are:
- Everything changes and ends,
- Things do not always go according to plan,
- Life is not always fair,
- Pain is part of life,
- People are not loving and loyal all the time.
Dave explored with us how we cannot find real contentment and success in our lives until we acknowledge and come to terms with these facts and gave us many practical ways of looking at and facilitating change and the development of true emotional intelligence.
Dave Richo, Ph.D., is a psychotherapist, teacher, and writer who draws upon Jungian, Buddhist, and poetic perspectives in his work. He leads popular workshops at the famous Esalen Institute, the University of California at Berkeley, the University of California at Santa Barbara, and Santa Barbara City College. He is the author of How to Be an Adult, How to Be an Adult in Relationships, and Shadow Dance: Liberating the Power and Creativity of Your Dark Side. His latest book is The Five Things We Cannot Change and the Happiness We Find by Embracing Them (Shambhala, 2005).
“I’ve had so many insights since the weekend with David I’m not sure I can keep up with the learning”. CH, Consultant

The Re-imagination of Success – A Workshop with Richard Olivier - 15 October 2010
What to Remember When Waking – 2010/11 Salon Series - Starting 22/23 November 2010
We are delighted to be hosting another collaboration between David Whyte and Richard Olivier. This follows their highly successful workshop in June - The Symmetries of Power & Performance. Also starting in November we commence the fourth of our salon series with David.
The Re-imagination of Success
15 October 2010
“Is it possible to re-imagine success and reward it in a way more beneficial to society without individual genius disappearing in bland political correctness or collective mediocrity? Is it possible to re-imagine success pivoting away from individual reward towards a team, an organi¬sation, a society, without losing the colour and flavour of an individual, and sometimes, artistic contribution?”
Whilst the recent banking crisis stimulated the topic for this workshop the focus will be a much broader and fundamental context. How would you or could you re-imagine success?
The day will be shaped around Shakespeare’s “As You Like It”, a classic hero’s journey tale of exile, renewal and return. The play starts in a Court which has become stuck in its old ways and is beginning to be repressive. Our heroes and heroines leave the old Court and journey into the Forest of Arden in search of a better life. Once there they find a different way of being: they forge new relationships, engage in dialogue and creative play and end up releasing untapped potentials and new possibilities. The play ends with the commitment ritual of marriage and a promise to bring the renewed energy back from the Forest to regenerate the Court, for the good of all.
This journey is one, I believe, many of us are seeking to undertake and enable. Richard will hold the story of “As You Like It” and point to the wisdom hidden within the myth and David will use poetry and philosophy to deepen our understanding of the following themes:
Act 1 – what oppresses us at present? ....the strategic mind.
Act 2 – into the forest, letting go of the known
Act 3 – philosophical thinking and creative expression
Act 4 – educating the heart – robust vulnerability
Act 5 – the four marriages; self, other, work and spirit
The great challenge and the great calling of our times might be to live larger than our fears.

David’s work has struck a resonant chord within organisations and the personal and professional development arenas around the world. The poet can lead where the strategic business mind cannot take us. He is the author of 3 books of prose including Crossing the Unknown Sea: Work as a Pilgrimage of Identity plus 5 books of poetry including River Flow - New & Selected Poems 1984–2007.
“Everyone I met was raving about him. The delegates were like a ‘who’s who’ of British Industry and Whyte stole the show”.
Richard is the founding voice of Mythodrama, which combines great leadership stories from Shakespeare with models from organisational best practice. His work is at the leading edge of bringing the world of theatre and the arts into the development of authentic leaders. He is an Associate Fellow, Templeton College, Oxford and was guest speaker at the 2003 and 2009 World Economic Forums in Davos.
“Management is theatre – nobody conveys that better than Richard Olivier”.
What to Remember When Waking – 2010/11 Salon Series
22/23 November 2010, 28 February/1 March, 16/17 May 2011
Most of us have talents and qualities that live in isolation from the world, never finding a proper outlet or focus. This can lead to a sense of aimless, endless adaptation, rather than a growing feeling of belonging and generosity. There are ways of building this sense of belonging - disciplines that develop real maturity in a human being.
It is important to recognize that what we look for is not untrammelled happiness, but an enlarging conversation that can encompass even the most harrowing losses. This conversation is not a Pollyanna search for a hidden key to happiness, but a profound ability to make ourselves large enough, brave enough and generous enough for the triumphs and profound difficulties needed to live even the most ordinary human life.
The salon series is an opportunity to 3 times over 7 months in a small group setting, (maximum of 21 people). This is our fourth salon series. It is a format David and participants really enjoy and value. Some participants will be returning for their fourth series, they find the salons a continual source of revelation and development. The format provides a context for a deepening on-going conversation which continues between modules with what has arisen during the salon and with questions offered for reflection and exploration. Each salon will start late afternoon on the first day with a presentation from David setting the scene for the salon. The conversation continues informally into the evening, which includes a fine dinner. The second day will start at 9.30 and finish by 4.30.
Fees:
£1500+VAT
Refreshments, plus dinner on the first day and lunch on the second day of each salon are included in the price.
Please note the salons are being offered as a continuous series and are not being sold individually. However following a number of requests we are accepting people who can make only two of the three salons in the series but the full price will be charged.

Our Somatic Intelligence workshops are designed for leaders and managers and anyone else who wishes to develop their capacity for centred leadership, aligning mind and body and enhancing self awareness and the awareness of others,. The workshops draw on various approaches to mind and body development and on selected models of leadership and management. We draw notably on practices derived from the revolutionary martial art of Aikido, including the work of Wendy Palmer and Paul Linden and from mindfulness practices and NLP. The workshops involve movement, fully engaging the body in the process of learning about our habitual ways of behaving and thinking and developing alternative responses and actions that have integrity, clarity and are capable of being creative and effective. We work with such themes as centering under pressure, leadership and followership, advocating and listening from centre. The workshops are led by Paul King, co-founder and Managing Director of The Beyond Partnership and currently one of only two people in Europe certified to teach Conscious Embodiment.
The Body-Mind of Leadership – 7 October 2010
This one day introductory workshop is specifically designed for leaders and managers working in organisations. Any system functions at its best when it is aligned, for us individually this means aligning aspects of our body and mind. This releases energy engaged in unconscious habitual patterns and internal conflicts, supports our health, enables us to become more effective and therefore to become a clear and open leader worth following. Competition and survival let alone success in this changing world demand that we develop and use a greater range of our capacities. Even more significantly it is essential that we are able to use these effectively under pressure and not act reactively out of fear or anxiety, which typically limits us. For our organisations to be effective, efficient, adaptable, creative, resilient, coordinated, well lead and well managed it makes a difference if we can first do that for ourselves. This workshop will explore and offer means to do this.

“If you are afraid of something become interested in it.”

Somatic Intelligence Workshop 19/20 November or 26/27 November 2010 tbc
Through various activities and practices we will work with the body and mind in the process of learning about our habitual patterns of behaving and thinking and exploring ways to respond to the incoming pressures of life from a place of “centre” rather than from our judgements and fears. We will work with such themes as centering under pressure, finding balance, effective leadership and followership, focusing energy, aligning body and mind to your outcomes and attuning to oneself and others. The workshop will draw upon martial arts, mindfulness practice, Conscious Embodiment, energy work, Feldenkrais and NLP.

This is an evening to remember. Each activity is carefully chosen and facilitated to explore the fears and blocks in our life that stop us becoming and being all we can be.
"If somebody wants to challenge and to learn more about themselves – in a variety of different ways – to push their own boundaries in an environment which feels safe, friendly, caring, supportive and non-pressured, then this is a fabulous way to do it…..quickly and enjoyably. There is always the choice to trust your own instincts and choose not to do something and to know that’s OK too."

A powerful and profound 2-day experiential leadership development event exploring the fundamental principles of leadership through learning and applying the art of horse whispering.
For many of us there is sometimes a gap between theory and practice,
between what we know and what we do. In this course you will discover
where some of those gaps are and how to become a more effective
leader and communicator. Working with horses participants come face
to face with their personal challenges of leadership and communication.
It is profound learning and development. Personal coaching, both
in the ring and outside; watching others and group discussion clarifies
the principles and lessons for effective leadership in theory and
in personal practice.
"The course provided instant feedback and the opportunity to transfer learning to organisational behaviours. I was curious and found the course to be both challenging and thrilling with constant feedback and discussion. The horse waits for your guidance, scary and thrilling and the best adventure I have experienced in my person development. I believe the size of the group contributed to my learning and provided the right balance of see one, do one etc. The accommodation was nice and the arrangements at the farm well organised and the timely application of learning to the organisational contexts was great".
SB, Director of Service Delivery
"For me, no other development programme has come close in terms of the impact and clarity of learning about how I can engage, motivate and inspire others. This is real, accelerated development, simple, clear and starkly self-evident".
LM Management Consultant.
"A development experience like no other - in working with the horses you experience profound and pure feedback, not clouded by agendas, egos, politics and so on. The learning from this will stay with me forever - the lessons for life and learning are amazing".

Anyone who has done NLP Masters will have acquired many of the skills that they need to be a good coach, however, NLP training is not recognised as coach specific training by any of the coaching professional bodies. Until now people had to go back to square one and attend a basic coaching programme that would not take account of all of your prior learning.
Our coach programme has been designed to provide qualifying NLP Master Practitioners with the “Coach Specific Training” needed to apply for accreditation with either the International Coaching Federation (ICF) or the Association for Coaching (AC).
This coach programme will assume all of your prior knowledge and experience and give you the “missing pieces” of Coach Specific Training to apply for accreditation as a coach. It will cover the core competencies, hours and assessment required by both ICF and AC.

Being a great trainer or presenter is much more than developing good skills; it is about finding one’s identity and authentic expression. It is about taking your ego out of the way and becoming “an empty flute”. This training is designed for NLP Master Practitioners who already have some training or facilitation experience and who want to make a step change in their ability to work with and lead groups and become an excellent NLP trainer.
It is a 20 day modular training running over 6 months. Participants will have plenty of opportunity to present and receive feedback during the modules and will be set tasks and assignments throughout the programme and will have the opportunity to model guest trainers. The training is carefully designed to enable you to become fluent in essential training skills and group dynamics and to find your authentic expression as a trainer
"As an experienced trainer, I signed up for this programme hoping to further embed NLP into my ways of thinking and being. I have certainly done that, and I got a lot more besides. I genuinely feel that I am a better trainer for attending this programme, whatever I am delivering, I learned how to dance with my learners, and mostly avoid treading on their toes! I liked the structure of the modules, particularly the guest trainers, and of course I loved the venue - it made a real difference for me to be in such an inspiring and comfortable environment”. MBTI Overview
MBTI theory describes 16 personality types which are derived from
4 dimensions of personality, Extrovert-Introvert, Sensing-Intuition,
Thinking-Feeling, Judging-Perceiving and suggests that we each have
preferences for a particular aspect of each dimension. MBTI Step
I classifies an individual according to these 16 types.
Many people who complete Step I find they agree with maybe 3 out
of 4 of the dimensions identified but do so with a 'yes, but' feeling.
In some way the profile doesn't quite 'fit'.
What Step II does is divide each personality trait into a further
five facets and then indicates where someone has "out of preference"
traits, where for example an individual who is generally an extrovert
exhibits one or two facets where they are more like an introvert.
People completing Step II find the additional distinctions make
their personal profile 'fit' better and when considering the profiles
of others Step II provides greater understanding and much more useful
information for relating to and managing others.
